The first chapter of Jonah describes a “huge fish” (verse 17 NIV) that swallowed Jonah whole. When people use the term biblical proportions, this large fish comes to my mind. The painting shows a bird’s eye view of an ancient ship in a rainstorm. There is a shadow lurking underneath the sea. There is debate about whether the animal that swallow Jonah was a whale or a fish but the size of the beast paints a great picture.
