I have seen many paintings and sketches (even coloring book pages) of Jacob physically wrestling with God. What I found to be most interesting about this was the fact that they wrestled from night into the morning and how Jacob (or Israel as he is named after the night) calls the place “Peniel” which means the face of God. That’s why I used dramatic contrasts in the shading and, hidden by shadows and the border of the piece, the profile of a face. Israel, exhausted, shields his own face as well.
