Sight

The focus of this painting is on Jesus’ eyes.  I’ve heard a preacher describe them as pools of everlasting love, and I tried to show all the emotion through the eyes only here.  Jesus stares directly at you (focused on you) with eternal love.  His eyebrows are motionless, His nostrils aren’t flaring, even the wrinkles in His face are not present.  He remains silent – if this painting was a movie instead of a still image, it would look just the same – Jesus pausing to look directly at you.

The painting is called “Sight” as a reference to the eyes, but more so, alluding to Jesus’ knowledge of the ridicule, torment, and death He was to endure for us.  Even so, Jesus’ love never once faltered.  The lower eyelashes in the painting form the crown of thorns.

In the final, detailed, contrast layer of the piece, shavings of olive wood from a tree in Bethlehem were mixed into the paint.  These shavings mixed with black symbolize God’s sacrifice of His only Son, born in Bethlehem to be executed on a cross on Calvary and rise as death’s conqueror and Savior for those who are born again.
